PVC Pipe Fitting Standards: BSP vs NPT vs Metric Explained
Identify thread form, taper, sealing method and socket dimension before ordering PVC irrigation fittings—so components connect correctly without forced threads or improvised adapters.

BSP, NPT and Socket Connections Are Different Systems
“BSP” must be narrowed to parallel or tapered. “Metric” usually describes a socket or pipe outside diameter in millimetres—not automatically a metric screw thread.
| Connection | Common designation | Form | Typical sealing method | Reference |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BSPP | G | Parallel, 55° thread profile | Washer, O-ring, bonded seal or designed sealing face outside the threads | ISO 228-1 |
| BSPT | R external; Rc or Rp internal | Tapered pressure-tight thread system, 55° profile | Thread interference with a compatible sealing product where required | ISO 7-1 |
| NPT | NPT | Tapered, 60° thread profile | Thread interference with a compatible pipe-thread sealant | ASME B1.20.1 |
| Metric solvent socket | d20, d25, d32, d50... | Plain socket sized to metric-series pipe OD | Approved solvent-cement jointing system | Often ISO 1452 / applicable regional adoption |
| Inch solvent socket | 1/2, 3/4, 1, 2 in... | Plain socket sized to the specified inch pipe series | Approved solvent-cement jointing system | May use ASTM Schedule or another named inch series |
Some nominal sizes have similar outside diameters or pitches and may engage for a few turns. The thread angles, profiles and certain pitches differ, so the assembly is not a verified pressure joint and can split a plastic fitting.
How to Identify an Unknown Pipe Thread
Use markings first, then confirm geometry. A nominal pipe size is a standard designation and is not the same as a direct caliper measurement.
BSPP is parallel; BSPT and NPT are tapered. BSP forms use a 55° rounded Whitworth profile, while NPT uses a 60° profile. Visual inspection alone may not reliably separate small or worn threads.

Metric Socket Is Not the Same as Inch Socket
A metric PVC fitting is normally identified by the compatible pipe outside diameter in millimetres. An inch fitting is normally identified by a nominal inch pipe size within a named dimension series. Neither label alone confirms wall thickness, pressure rating or joint standard.
OD stated in millimetres
Specify the pipe and fitting standard, OD, pressure class and material—for example PVC-U, ISO 1452 series, d50, PN16—subject to the supplier’s certificate.
Nominal inch size
Specify the exact series, such as an applicable ASTM Schedule system, plus nominal size, schedule/class, material and fitting standard.
PN is a nominal pressure designation under defined reference conditions. Schedule is a dimension series related to wall thickness. Confirm actual dimensions and rated pressure at operating temperature instead of converting by name.

Solvent cement, primer requirements, insertion depth, cure time and temperature limits depend on the material, product and governing procedure. Do not pressure-test with compressed air unless the component manufacturer and applicable rules explicitly permit it.
Write a Fitting Specification That Cannot Be Misread
A complete enquiry describes both ends of the fitting and the service conditions. A photo or “1-inch PVC fitting” is not enough.
Information to provide
- Fitting type and material: elbow, tee, union, adapter; PVC-U, CPVC, PP or other
- Connection at each end: socket, G/BSPP, R/BSPT, NPT, flange or compression
- Nominal size plus measured pipe OD where practical
- Named dimensional/thread standard and current required edition
- Pressure class, operating pressure and design temperature
- Fluid, sealing method, quantity and required certification
Example enquiry format
Product: PVC-U female adapter
End 1: d50 metric solvent socket, ISO 1452 series
End 2: G 1-1/2 female BSPP with EPDM seal
Pressure: PN16 at stated reference temperature
Service: filtered irrigation water
Quantity: 500 pcs
Documents: dimension drawing + material/pressure declarationReplace every example value with the project requirement. Confirm the sealing design of the actual adapter rather than assuming from the thread label.
| Common ordering mistake | Why it fails | Better wording |
|---|---|---|
| “BSP fitting” | Does not distinguish parallel BSPP from tapered BSPT | State G/BSPP or R/Rc/Rp/BSPT, size and seal design. |
| “1-inch thread” | Could mean NPT, BSP or another system | State standard and designation, such as NPT 1 or G 1. |
| “50 mm equals 2 inch” | Metric and inch socket ODs are separate dimensional series | State pipe OD, socket series and governing standard. |
| “PN16 equals Schedule 80” | Pressure class and schedule describe different systems | Specify the required standard, dimensions and pressure rating separately. |

Are BSP and NPT threads interchangeable?
No. BSP and NPT use different thread profiles, and several sizes also use different pitches. Similar nominal sizes may start to engage, but that does not create a standards-compliant pressure connection.
What is the difference between BSPP and BSPT?
BSPP is a parallel fastening thread commonly designated G and normally seals at a washer, O-ring or designed face. BSPT belongs to the ISO 7 pressure-tight thread system and uses tapered thread engagement, with R, Rc or Rp designations depending on the component.
Can PTFE tape make an NPT fitting fit a BSP port?
No. Seal tape cannot correct incompatible thread angle, pitch, taper or geometry. Use a properly specified adapter or replace the mismatched component.
Is a 50 mm PVC socket the same as a 2-inch socket?
Not automatically. Metric and inch products belong to different dimensional series, and their actual pipe outside diameters and socket dimensions may differ. Verify the pipe OD and governing standard.
Does PN16 mean the same thing as Schedule 80?
No. PN is a nominal pressure designation, while Schedule is an inch-based wall-thickness dimension series. There is no safe name-only conversion; check the exact product standard, dimensions, material, temperature and rated pressure.
How can I identify an unmarked pipe thread?
Check whether it is parallel or tapered, measure major diameter and pitch with suitable tools, inspect the intended seal, and compare every feature with a standard table or calibrated gauge. Do not rely on diameter alone.
