Irrigation Solutions
Compare drip and sprinkler options for your maize field. Match delivery capacity to the crop, soil and irrigation window—especially around flowering.
Illustrative applications and product guidance—not completed TREX customer projects.
Capacity matters
when demand rises.
- Crop and harvest goalIdentify grain maize, silage maize or sweet corn; their harvest targets and late-season decisions differ.
- Water supplyMeasure available flow and pressure, then check how much area can be served within the operating window.
- Soil and terrainUse infiltration, water-holding capacity and slope to guide zone size and application rate.
No fixed yield gain or water-saving percentage is promised. Performance depends on design and field management.

Drip precision. Sprinkler coverage.
Compare installation, crop height, labour and water supply before selecting a system. No single method fits every maize field.

Surface & subsurface drip
Match lateral spacing to the row pattern and soil wetting behaviour. Plan surface-line handling around field operations. For SDI, confirm model suitability, installation depth, air/vacuum protection and flushing access.

Field sprinkler layouts
Check nozzle flow, pressure, spacing and overlap together. Account for wind, soil infiltration and changing canopy height. Confirm that the selected sprinkler and mounting arrangement can provide suitable field coverage.

Check the complete system
- Water qualitySize filtration for contaminants, zone flow and the selected emitters or nozzles.
- Operating pressureAllow for pipe and filter losses; stay within component ratings.
- Fertigation compatibilityWhere fertigation is planned, confirm fertilizer compatibility, injection performance and suitable backflow protection.
- Maintenance accessInclude gauges, isolation and accessible flushing ends. For SDI, add an appropriate air/vacuum protection and monitoring plan.
Protect the flowering window.
Emergence & vegetative growth
Check seed-zone moisture and root development. Update irrigation as the canopy expands, accounting for effective rainfall and soil water storage.
Tasseling & silking
Water stress around flowering can disrupt pollination and kernel set. Monitor soil moisture closely and check that system capacity can meet the planned demand.
Grain fill & crop finish
Continue assessing water needs after pollination. Base the final irrigation on remaining demand, stored soil water, weather and the intended harvest—not a calendar date alone.
Maize irrigation FAQs
Is drip better than sprinklers for maize?
Compare field geometry, soil, wind, water supply, equipment handling and budget. Drip needs suitable filtration and lateral management; sprinklers need appropriate pressure, overlap and crop clearance.
Does every row need its own dripline?
Not always. Validate the wetted root-zone coverage for your soil and row pattern before using wider lateral spacing. A layout used successfully elsewhere is not proof of suitability for your field.
When should I stop irrigating grain maize?
Estimate remaining water demand to physiological maturity and compare it with usable soil water and expected rainfall. Do not stop simply because kernels have dented. Silage maize and sweet corn need decisions matched to their own harvest targets.
