Cotton Drip Irrigation

Deliver water to the cotton root zone. Compare surface and subsurface drip layouts, then match filtration, flow and pressure to your field.

Why drip for cotton?

Put water
along the crop rows.

  • Targeted deliveryApply water through planned lateral lines instead of deliberately wetting the entire field surface.
  • Manageable irrigation zonesDivide fields around soil, slope and available flow so each zone can operate within its design limits.
  • Nutrient application optionsIntegrate compatible fertigation equipment when required by the local nutrient plan.

Results depend on design, crop management and maintenance. Drip irrigation alone does not guarantee higher lint yield or fibre quality.

Surface or subsurface?

Start with cotton row spacing, soil wetting patterns, tillage depth and machinery routes. Neither layout has one universal lateral spacing.

Surface drip tape & dripline

Accessible lines make inspection and seasonal retrieval easier. Select wall thickness and placement for field handling, exposure and the intended service life; protect lines during cultivation and harvest.

Subsurface drip irrigation (SDI)

Buried lines can stay out of routine surface operations when correctly placed. Use purpose-rated dripline and plan filtration, air/vacuum protection, flushing, leak detection and root-intrusion management.

Before choosing SDI, check whether its wetting pattern can support germination at seed depth. Where it cannot, plan a suitable establishment-water strategy with a local irrigation adviser.

Check the complete system

  • Water qualitySize filtration for contaminants, zone flow and emitter requirements.
  • Operating pressureAllow for pipe and filter losses; stay within component ratings.
  • Fertigation compatibilityConfirm fertilizer solubility, injector performance and suitable backflow protection.
  • Maintenance accessInclude gauges, isolation and accessible flushing ends. For SDI, add an appropriate air/vacuum protection and monitoring plan.
Follow the crop, not only the calendar

Adjust water through the cotton season.

Establishment & squaring

Check seed-zone moisture and early root development. Avoid both prolonged saturation and water stress as squares develop.

Flowering & boll filling

Monitor soil moisture and crop demand closely. Use effective rainfall, local evapotranspiration information and measured system delivery to update irrigation.

Boll maturity & finish

Base irrigation termination on harvestable boll maturity, stored soil water and local guidance—not a fixed date or a rule imported from another region.

Check pressure and representative emitter flows during operation. A wet patch at one outlet does not confirm uniform delivery across the zone.

Cotton drip irrigation FAQs

Does every cotton row need a drip lateral?

Not necessarily. Row geometry, soil water movement and crop coverage determine the layout. Validate any alternate-row arrangement with field wetting tests and hydraulic design.

How deep should an SDI line be buried?

Depth depends on soil, tillage, root-zone coverage, machinery and establishment requirements. Do not bury ordinary surface tape by default; confirm that the selected model is suitable for SDI.

When should irrigation stop?

There is no single cutoff for all cotton regions. Assess boll maturity, remaining crop demand, soil water and weather with local agronomic guidance before terminating irrigation.
