Plan Water Spraying Around Your Dust Source
Explore sprinklers, rain guns, valves and fittings for surface-wetting applications in stockyards, service roads and material-handling areas. Share your site conditions with TREX to discuss suitable product options.

Surface Wetting and Airborne Dust Capture Are Different Tasks
Limit Dust Before It Becomes Airborne
Apply water to the material or traffic surface that generates dust. Broad-area sprinklers may suit this task where the material accepts water and the site can manage the resulting moisture.
Confirm the required coverage and moisture limit with the operator.
Specify the Spray for the Dust Source
Capturing suspended particles requires attention to droplet characteristics, airflow and nozzle placement. A sprinkler's throw distance alone does not establish its dust-capture performance.
Source enclosures, extraction or purpose-designed sprays may be needed at individual process points.
Scope: This page supports water-delivery product selection. Visible dust reduction does not demonstrate control of respirable dust exposure; verify performance within the site's dust-control plan.
Three Applications to Review
Exposed Material Surfaces
Consider pile height, shape and changing stock levels when positioning sprinklers. Confirm that added moisture is compatible with storage and downstream processing.
- Review shadowed areas behind piles.
- Check access for loading equipment.
Traffic-Generated Surface Dust
Plan coverage around traffic routes and turning areas. Adjust application to surface conditions, weather and use rather than relying on an unchanged timer setting.
- Avoid creating slippery or muddy sections.
- Protect pipes and supports from vehicles.
Localized Handling Activity
Review spray placement near the point of dust generation. Smaller targeted arrangements may be more practical than wetting the entire yard.
- Check material and equipment compatibility.
- Coordinate with other source-control measures.

Check Wind, Drainage and Nearby Activity
Wind can move spray away from the intended area. Assess coverage under representative conditions and account for buildings, equipment and boundaries.
Plan collection or drainage for excess water. Where runoff could carry sediment, include it in the site's water-management arrangements.
Select Components from the Required Flow and Pressure
Use the selected sprinkler's performance data to define operating demand. Include pipe friction, elevation and component losses when reviewing the water supply.
| Function | Products to review | Selection checks |
|---|---|---|
| Broad-area spraying | Irrigation rain guns | Nozzle flow, required pressure, usable coverage and mounting loads. Confirm suitability for the site. |
| Distributed spraying | Metal impact sprinklers | Operating range, pattern, spacing and water quality. Check the selected model's data. |
| Zone isolation | Ball valves and butterfly valves | Pipe size, pressure rating, pressure loss and service access. |
| Automatic switching | Solenoid valves | Flow and pressure range, controller compatibility and the required operating sequence. |
| Water filtration | Irrigation filters | Suspended solids, nozzle requirements, system flow and cleaning frequency. |
| Piping and monitoring | Pipe fittings, pressure gauges and flowmeters | Connection dimensions, material compatibility, measurement range and installation location. |
Match the Number of Operating Sprinklers to the Supply
Add the flow requirements of all sprinklers that will run together. Check that the supply can maintain the required pressure at the most demanding location.
Where capacity is limited, evaluate zone sequencing. Allow access to clean filters and measure operating pressure during a site trial.

Can irrigation sprinklers be used for dust suppression?
They can be considered for surface wetting where the material, site conditions and operating requirements suit water application. Confirm model performance and trial the arrangement. Airborne dust capture may need a different spray design.
How many sprinklers will my site need?
The number depends on site geometry, the selected nozzle's performance, wind, obstacles and required coverage. Divide the layout into operating zones only after checking the available water supply.
Can I select a rain gun by throw distance alone?
No. Check the nozzle flow and required pressure, the actual coverage under site conditions, mounting requirements and acceptable water application. Catalogue throw distance alone does not establish dust-control performance.
Can recycled water be used?
Assess the water quality against equipment requirements and the site's water-use conditions. Confirm filtration and material compatibility, and account for the potential for spray drift and contact with people.
How do I avoid excessive wetting?
Use a representative trial to set the application and operating sequence. Review surface condition, material moisture limits and drainage, then adjust as weather and site activity change.
